Today's riddle: What day of the year is trucker's day? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Savannah's "Moonshot" initiative continues push for literacy advocacy (thestate.com) — Savannah and Chatham County education leaders are rallying around an ambitious Moonshot goal: 95% of third graders reading on grade level by 2031. At a summit at Savannah State University, school officials and community partners reported early gains, launched a literacy champion pledge, and urged residents to get more engaged in school board decisions and student reading progress.
2. Bananas president disputes damage to Daffin Park oaks (wtoc.com) — Savannah officials and the Savannah Bananas are at odds over how much damage construction of the team's new training facility caused to nine live oaks in Daffin Park. City photos show non-fatal root damage and potential $30,000 remediation, while the team's president insists the trees' problems predated construction and highlights new bollards and drainage improvements.
3. 2026 sees slight tourism dip in the Coastal Empire (wsav.com) — Savannah's tourism leaders say the city is still attracting strong visitor numbers, but this summer's hotel occupancy dipped a few points from last year as travel costs rose and a major sports event didn't return. City officials and Visit Savannah remain optimistic, pointing to holiday-season promotions like Savannah Holly Days to help drive a busy fall and winter for local businesses.
4. 3 people in Savannah arrested on RICO, shoplifting charges (wtoc.com) — Savannah residents may want to know that three local people are now jailed in Chatham County on serious RICO and repeat shoplifting charges after being booked by Savannah Police. The suspects, all previously charged with shoplifting, are currently being held without bond while facing multiple racketeering and theft counts tied to alleged organized retail crime.
5. Construction industry champions heart health through campaign (heart.org) — Construction and design firms around Savannah are teaming up with the American Heart Association to tackle high rates of cardiovascular disease in their industry through the Hard Hats with Heart campaign. Local companies are encouraged to promote healthier food, exercise, stress reduction and CPR training, culminating in a November 19 networking event at Tubby's Tank House for participating leaders.
