Here are the top stories today in Savannah:
- The Coast Guard Air Station Savannah rescued two men after their boat capsized in Sapelo Sound on Friday. Officials received a mayday call about a 38-foot sailboat that was "going down fast." A helicopter located the boat's passengers within 20 minutes of receiving the call thanks to red smoke flares, and both were retrieved from the water with no medical concerns. The owner of the boat is working with salvage crews to retrieve the vessel, according to the Coast Guard. (ABC 15)
- Local organizations handed out 600 turkeys to Savannah residents in need on Sunday. Volunteers from St. John Baptist Church, The Mighty Fortress, the Tate Law Group, and Tate Global Media passed out food to the hundreds of families lined up at Memorial Stadium to receive a free Thanksgiving meal. The now annual Turkey Drive started during the pandemic in response to growing food insecurity and rising food prices, as evidenced by Savannah's 28 percent poverty rate. (WSAV-TV)
- Savannah's ninth annual Cranksgiving ride in was held on Saturday to deliver supplies to Emmaus House. Founded in 1982 by a group of downtown churches, Emmaus House provides food and day services to Savannah's homeless and needy residents. Participants in the half bike ride, the half food drive shopped for the donated supplies using a different form of transportation other than a car. (fox28media.com)
