Here are the top stories today in Savannah:
- The Salvation Army of Savannah has reported an increase in people seeking rental assistance and shelter since the federal eviction moratorium ended on Aug. 31. Chatham County has issued more than 400 eviction notices since Sept. 1, which means more local residents are seeking refuge in homeless shelters. As these transitional housing units fill up, the Salvation Army is partnering with Georgia Power and Chatham County to provide assistance in paying rent and utilities. (WSAV-TV)
- The Savannah Police Department is participating in National Drug Take Back Day tomorrow, Oct. 23. The SPD will be partnering with Memorial Hospital to hold a collection event at the hospital campus on 4700 Waters Ave. from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. There is a permanent collection site at SPD Headquarters (201 Habersham St.), where unused prescriptions can be properly disposed of every day of the year. - Savannah City Manager Jay Melder announced that P3 Venture Group's proposal for the Savannah fairgrounds property is the only one that met all city requirements and will be recommended for approval on the council agenda on Oct. 28. (WTOC)
- Yesterday, the Savannah College of Art and Design debuted its new XR Stage, a world-class, virtually immersive studio that faculty is calling "a gamechanger" for students. (fox28media.com)
- Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 26, the Coastal Health District will be offering all three COVID-19 booster shots — Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson — by appointment with the Chatham County Health Department. (fox28media.com)
