Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:
- Savannah Mayor Van Johnson addresses the recent rise in gun violence throughout the surrounding area. Johnson spoke about the rise in gun-related crime during his weekly press conference and promised a plan for the near future meant to reduce the trend. The mayor cited recidivism, gun laws, and bad decisions as the root causes of the uptick. (WSAV-TV)
- Savannah-based United Way of the Coastal Empire has created a disaster response fund to direct money toward Bryan County residents that were impacted by the recent tornado. The fund will reportedly provide assistance to those impacted by providing temporary shelter, food, gas cards, clothing, and medicine. Donations can be made by visiting the non-profit's website or by texting "HelpToday" to 40403. (WTOC)
- Savannah's tree canopy is a vital component of the area's culture and lifestyle. The Savannah Tree Foundation is celebrating 40 years of operation by publishing the Savannah Tree Series.
