🌱Monuments In Troup Square + Savannah Journalist Turned Educator

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Savannah.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Savannah! Like many of you, the Patch team is taking some time off to celebrate the New Year, so there will not be a newsletter in your inbox tomorrow. We appreciate your understanding of this slight pause in our schedule, and I will be back on Monday with the next edition of the Savannah Daily! Now, here's everything happening around town today.

First, today's weather:

Some rain and a thunderstorm. High: 78 Low: 66.

Here are the top three today in Savannah:

  1. Two unique and unusual monuments have sparked interest in Troup Square. The Armillary Sphere was intended to be used as a sundial, but it's unclear why this was chosen to be constructed in the Square. The Myer Drinking Fountain was originally meant for humans, but after a smaller version was constructed it's perfect for dogs to drink out of. (Free: Yahoo! News, Subscription: Savannah Morning News)
  2. Former journalism student Melody Senia found her true calling as a Savannah schools educator. She says teaching has given her the opportunity to "[accomplish] something that was fulfilling." She was named a finalist competing for the 2022-23 teacher of the year for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. (Free: Yahoo! News, Subscription: Savannah Morning News)
  3. Savannah Fire Department is investigating a southside garage fire. The fire began in the ceiling and was fueled by art supplies inside the garage, but the cause itself is unknown. No one was inside the home at the time of the fire. (WSAV-TV)

  • The SCAD Museum of Art is closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. They are excited to welcome guests back to Christian Siriano's exhibition in 2022! (Facebook)
  • Savannah Children's Theatre thanks everyone for their support this year. It isn't too late to consider SCT in end-of-year giving, which will allow them to continue to inspire, educate & entertain for many years to come. (Facebook)
  • In honor of the Lucas' Centennial Celebration, the Lucas Theatre for the Arts is asking patrons to look through their old mementos and share a picture of their oldest ticket stub. It can be shared by tagging the theater or emailing scadtheaters@scad.edu. Winners will receive a pass to the 2022 SCAD Savannah Film Festival. (Facebook)
