Here are the top three stories today in Savannah:
- Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools has been called out by a community group to remove books from the library they deem inappropriate for children. "No Left Turn in Education" had their quarterly meeting where they passed out explicit excerpts from books that are present on the school grounds, the group feels the schools are a safe space, and the material is unacceptable. Currently, school libraries are exempt from a Georgia law that makes it illegal to distribute "harmful materials" to minors. (WJCL News Savannah)
- For the first time in three years, the Savannah Black Heritage Festival returned to in-person celebrations just in time for its Grand Celebration Day. Saturday was one of the biggest days throughout the month, with many activities, including meeting local Savannah authors, marketplace vendors, a health fair, and even a concert from a local band. This day was also for celebration as it was the 100th birthday of Westley W. Law, the festival's founder. (WTOC)
- A house fire in the Brighton Woods neighborhood resulted in the death of an elderly couple and their young grandchild on Saturday morning, with the Pooler Fire Department responding to a call about the fire. Thirty-two fire personnel helped at the scene and gave CPR to the victims before being taken to a hospital. Still, unfortunately, they later died, with the fire believed to be accidental and caused by an electrical circuit overload. The tragedy has shocked neighbors, and the authorities are investigating the incident. (WTOC)
