Here are the top 3 stories today in Savannah:

  1. Due to a recent spike in COVID cases among students and staff, three Savannah high schools are temporarily shifting back to remote learning. Beach High, Islands High and Johnson High will move to virtual learning for the remainder of the week, effective immediately; schools are expected to resume in-person classes on Tuesday, Jan. 18. 2. A local program is giving teens first-hand underwater experiences to teach them about the wonders of marine life. Savannah's SCUBAnauts program allows divers to train both indoors and outdoors, granting them valuable hands-on opportunities including marine preservation efforts. The SCUBAnauts are next headed to the Florida Keys, where they'll help rebuild coastal coral systems. (fox28media.com)
  3. Savannah folk artist Scott Stanton, better known as Panhandle Slim, suffered a major loss right before the New Year when his studio burned down. On Saturday, Stanton hosted a pop-up sale Saturday to recuperate from the loss. Though the sale officially started at 11:00 a.m., supporters in the community were already picking pieces by 10:00 a.m. —and by the time the event officially started, over three-quarters of the art was already purchased.
