Here are the top four stories in Savannah today:
- The Savannah Police Department has arrested a second suspect in the murder of a British tourist that occurred on Apr. 24. The department has arrested Corey Reynolds Kent, 43, on one count of murder. Georgiamae Lawrence was previously arrested and is also charged with one count of murder. (WJCL News Savannah)
- Hyundai Motor Group is expected to make an announcement next week about a new $7 billion electric vehicle plant it will be building near Savannah, according to a U.S. official who is familiar with the anticipated announcement. According to the anonymous source, The White House has been in discussions with the South Korean automaker about the project, which is expected to bring thousands of new jobs to Georgia. A formal announcement is likely during President Joe Biden's visit to Seoul next week. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- Jamesetta Whipple-Duncan, 59, has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for her alleged role in a pill mill scheme that illegally dispensed massive amounts of drugs. Whipple-Duncan pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of money laundering and will also pay $86,074 in restitution after completing her prison sentence. Whipple-Duncan owned and operated the now-closed Georgia Laboratory Diagnostics LLC. (fox28media.com)
- The Savannah Police Department has arrested a man for impersonating a firefighter while soliciting donations. Ernest Wayne Nissley, 48, was reportedly soliciting several businesses for funds to support firefighters battling cancer. Nissley attempted to sell raffle tickets and meals as part of his fundraising scam. He has been charged with theft by deception and commercial gambling. (WJCL News Savannah)
