Weekly Covid Testing For Students + The Weeping Time Coalition

Your five-minute guide to everything worth knowing in town today.

Good day, neighbors! It's me again, Sammi Caramela, your host of the Savannah Daily.

First, today's weather:

Humid with a few showers. High: 83 Low: 72.

Here are the top stories in Savannah today:

  1. Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools will be implementing a new weekly COVID testing requirement for students participating in athletics, cheerleading, band, and junior ROTC. The deadline for students to register is next Monday, with testing beginning on Oct. 18. Officials have warned that if those students do not register for weekly testing, they will not be allowed to continue participating in their programs. (WSAV-TV)
  2. The Weeping Time Coalition is suing every member in the Savannah City Council over a proposal that would allow the Salvation Army to build a homeless shelter on what they claim is the site of the largest slave auction in U.S. history. The proposal was only to be approved if a professional study proved it was not the site of The Weeping Time, however the group claims that some council members knowingly approved the project located off Augusta Ave. in West Savannah despite their findings. The Weeping Time Coalition held a protest on Monday in front of Chatham County Superior Court. (WTOC)
  3. The Savannah College of Art and Design Museum of Art is celebrating their 10th anniversary by debuting a new exhibit featuring the works of famed American designer Christian Siriano, titled People are People. (WTOC)
  4. As Hispanic Heritage Month continues, Savannah Hispanic business owners are making an impact on the Latino community. (WJCL News)
  5. On Monday, The Chatham County Veterans Council named Jim Grismer as the grand marshal of the 2021 Savannah Veterans Day parade. (WJCL News)
