A Close Shave for a Good Cause

What started as a grassroots effort 11 years ago has grown into an annual event that has raised in excess of $100 million for childhood cancer research. 

It’s the St. Balderick’s Foundation, a volunteer organization that shows solidarity with children dealing with the disease as thousands of people across the country shave their heads at fundraisers.

The Cumberland-area Tilted Kilt hosted its contribution to the cause Wednesday night with 12 men having their heads shaved and more than $3,000 being raised.

“For our first time trying this we’re happy,’’ said restaurant general Manger Dan Johnson.  “It’s a really great cause.’’

And with the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day, the fun doesn’t stop Thursday at the Kilt with live bands cranking up on the patio beginning at 3 p.m.

“We’ve got an Irish breakfast; we’re changing our menu up a bit,’’ Johnson said. “We’ve got Guinness stew and corned beef and cabbage. Scottish, Irish, English – the whole tilt we’re a part of. We’re a little bit of everything.’’
