According to spokesman Dana Pierce, officers arrived at the Wells Fargo at 3900 Mary Eliza Trace to discover a man lying prone in the parking lot with another man pointing a gun at him. Police ordered the armed man to drop his weapon, and he complied.

Investigators determined that the man detained in the parking lot, Mark Katchem of Chicago, presented a demand note to a bank teller at approximately 2:25 p.m. Another customer in the bank noticed what was going on and left the bank at the same time as Ketchum was leaving with the money. The customer went to his car, got his handgun, and ordered Ketchum to the ground before he could get away. Police arrived shortly thereafter, Pierce said.
