ATLANTA, GA -- The Atlanta Braves, set to move into the new SunTrust Park in Smyrna next season, will be doing so without manager Fredi Gonzalez.
The Braves made the announcement on Tuesday that Gonzalez, whose team is 9-28 after Monday's loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, will be was fired, according to Talking Chop.
Brian Snitker, manager of the Triple A Gwinnett Braves, is Gonzalez's replacement, according to MLB.com.
Also fired is bench coach Carlos Tosca. Bullpen coach Eddie Perez will move to first, while Marty Reed replaces Perez in the bullpen.
Gonzalez's record with the Braves is 434-413. But the team is off to its worst start in its 140-year history, and has Major League Baseball's worst record.
The Braves are in middle of a massive rebuilding effort. The front office, led by President of Baseball Operations John Hart and General Manager John Coppolella, has led a major overhaul of the team based on stockpiling young pitching and unloading expensive contracts on underproducing veterans such as Jason Heyward (now with the Cubs) and Justin Upton, who signed a massive deal with the Detroit Tigers.
The team began its rebuilding after firing GM Frank Wren in 2014. Wren is now senior vice president of baseball operations with the Boston Red Sox.
Gonzalez has been Atlanta's manager since Hall of Famer Bobby Cox's retirement in 2010. He becomes the first manager the Braves have fired since June 1990, when then-GM Cox moved into the dugout to replace Russ Nixon.
Snitker has been with the Braves organization since 1977 in several capacities as player, coach and minor league manager.
