Connecting Immigration to STEM

Aspects of immigration policy

The voices that we hear most often claiming we don’t need foreign workers appear to be disguised as appeals to fears many have in across our state. Hate speech is being offered as patriotism to close our borders. If we are truly a nation of immigrants, I am curious as to why these arguments always seem to find an audience. An equitable and well funded immigration policy is needed to support our economic well being, but just not to keep out those who don’t look like us. (But then what do we look like?)

Once again, congress and the nation have wrestled with the issue of increasing the yearly allotment of H-IB visas for high-skilled technical foreign workers despite abuses to this entry method being used by 9/11 terrorists.  The current cap is 65,000 has already been achieved for this year despite the furor over border security, terrorists, job loss, and the like.

Our nation’s future depends in great degree on our own home-grown and diverse STEM workforce. It makes great sense for Georgia to establish broadly-based STEM education initiatives.
