Education Roundtable Speaker: Social Worker Morphed Into an Attorney

The People you meet and their reasons for living become evident from the walk that they've taken in life.  One of tonight's presenters at the Smyrna Education Roundtable is an example of the faces behind the issue of school improvement.  On the phone last night with Tiffany we didn't even get around to discussing her position on the Public Charter School Referendum.  You'll have to ask her after her 7:00 p.m. presentation at Smyrna City Hall.  That presentation is preceeded by a Free Movie - Making the Grade in the same location at 6:00 p.m.

Tiffany Carter, currently lives in Dekalb County.  She is a native of Pittsburgh, PA, and received her undergraduate degree in Government from Oral Roberts University. After college, she worked as a social worker for the Department of Family & Children Services for 4 years. Due to the injustices she saw within the juvenile court system, she decided to become an attorney.  While still employed as a social worker, she enrolled into John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, GA.  During her time at John Marshall, she gained invaluable work experience at Atlanta Legal Aid, Fulton Juvenile Court, and the Family Division of Fulton Superior Court. After graduating from law school in 2008, she established her own practice in which she handles divorces, child custody issues, and bankruptcies.

While working within the legal field she saw many of her clients struggling with meeting the educational needs of their children.  Recognizing a gap between social work professional realities, educational policy, and the struggle to close the acheivement gap, Tiffany sees a need for advocating for parents.  She discovered BGEC or Brighter Georgia Education Coalition and found they were working towards providing parents with factual information regarding quality education options.  She joined the Coalition as a Regional Coordinator and now coordinates informational events to provide the general public with alternative education options that can meet the needs of Georgia students. She also continues to practice as a family law and bankruptcy attorney.
