Feather Extensions - A Trend that has Both Teens and Moms Flocking to Salons
All you need to know about the new feather extension craze!

If you watch American Idol you are probably aware of the new hair trend that is catching on all across America. One of the judges, Steven Tyler, has been sporting feather extensions in his hair for a while, although I do believe it is Ke$ha who gets the credit for actually starting the trend.
Other celebrities such as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Hillary Duff and Miley Cyrus are all getting "feathered," as well.
I am a hairstylist at a salon in Marietta called Intrigue Salon. We have been doing feather extensions since April and they are a huge success. They are great for both fickle teens and thrifty moms. At Intrigue, we charge $10 per feather or 3 for $25. That is a fraction of the cost of a permanently colored streak, which until we started with the feathers, was a highly requested item from our teen clientele.

The great thing about the feathers is when you've tired of them, you take them out; much easier than making an appointment at the salon to have your hot pink streaks covered up.
I've also had quite a few moms in my chair for feathers. In addition to bright or neon colors, there are plenty of more natural colored feathers available too. They add a nice amount of interest when matched up with hair that is a couple shades lighter or darker than the feathers. Once again, they are a great way to update your look with little commitment or expense.

The feathers are attached using a metal bead called a lock. Your stylist will weave a few strands of your hair through the bead then insert the feathers into the same bead. Using a small pair of pliers, the bead will be flattened to provide a secure connection. The feathers should last about six to eight weeks before needing to be moved up. As your hair grows and individual strands "shed out" the connection will become weaker.
The feathers can be washed and styled normally. They will also withstand the heat of a flat iron or curling iron. However, do keep in mind that hot tools heated over 4oo degrees may weaken the feathers and cause them to break eventually. (As a rule, hot tools should always be operated under 400 degrees anyway)
I just got three new feathers in my hair last week. Love them! I feel like I'm channeling my inner Stevie Nicks!
My search for salons offering this service in Smyrna-Vinings was unsuccessful, but feel free to visit Intrigue Salon on Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta.
