Cool Ways to Beat the Heat

With no heat relief in sight, escape indoors with these frugal ways to chill out.

Escape into the energizing, chill air of Cumberland Mall for a brief respite from Death Valley-caliber heat. Doesn’t everyone like to window shop? Whether you’re there for back-to-school shopping, wishful thinking, or socializing, Cumberland Mall is happening. Plenty of great stores await, Starbucks beckons with a frosty Frappuccino, and the Food Court hosts a bevy of tempting spots. Airy, bright, and cool, this is a great place to kill a few hours of an overheated afternoon. The mall is also holding a Wild West Sweepstakes for a chance to win a dude ranch! Taking an (easy) western trivia quiz will enter you into the contest for a chance to win a 7-day vacation for four at the Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, Ariz., plus a $1,000 Shop Etc. gift card! Other contests and giveaways are also featured on the website, including shopping sprees, special discounts, and a chance by Forever 21 to have a style named after you.

A double-header of artsy events awaits you at hipster hangout this weekend. On Friday, the zany Epidemic Theatre troupe will entertain and amaze as they present another transmission of Epidemic City Radio, featuring three episodes of "Captain Midnight." Come join the young adventures club as Captain Midnight flies off to adventure. This amusing and funny tale features four actors portraying twelve eccentric characters for your viewing pleasure. Tune in to Epidemic City Radio Friday at 8 p.m. to find out if Captain Midnight will be able to save Juanita Perada's treasure?

On Saturday, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., REV invites you to an art opening and reception for artist Chris Hamer as he debuts his August and Everything After solo art exhibition. Chris Hamer is the owner and operator of Urbnpop.com, the studio where he creates his works, which have been described as a hybrid between “cartoons and folk art.” His quirky, eclectically stylized works will grace the walls of Rev until the end of August. Then who knows what happens after?
