🌱 County Installs New Alert System + 116 Arrests At Airport This Year

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Smyrna-Vinings.

Hello again, hello! It's me, Carla Varner, your host of the Smyrna-Vinings Daily. Follow along to find out everything you need to know about what's happening around town.

First, today's weather:

Beautiful with periods of sun. High: 86 Low: 68.

Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:

  1. More than a dozen Cobb County school parents came out to the school board meeting on Thursday night to learn about Centegix, a new crisis alert system the county is installing after the previous system was hacked. The alert system is designed to protect the schools from an active shooter or other threat. "Centegix allows our police officers, administers, and dispatch to see an issued alert, what school, what specific location in a school, and the nature of the alert," said Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. (WSB Atlanta)
  2. The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) announced the projects that will receive funding from the $45 million in federal transportation money provided for by the infrastructure bill passed last year. Projects include accessibility improvements in Cobb County and transit center upgrades in Clayton County. Anna Roach, the regional commission's executive director, said those plans are just a small taste" of what metro Atlanta will see from the funding. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  3. From the beginning of the year to the end of May, Customs and Border Protection officers at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) arrested 116 wanted criminals as they attempted to enter or exit the U.S. on an international flight, officials said. "CBP officers in Atlanta collaborate with other law enforcement agencies throughout the country and internationally to ensure criminals are not able to freely walk the streets...[and] to accomplish our core mission as law enforcement officials — protect and safeguard the American public," said Henry DeBlock III, port director of Atlanta. Using the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database and cross-referencing active arrest warrants with the manifest of departing and arriving passengers, officers are able to identify a match and detain the passenger before turning them over to local authorities.
