Dispose Of Unused Drugs In Smyrna, Marietta, Acworth, Kennesaw

MARIETTA, GA -- WellStar Health System has announced a community event in October at multiple Cobb County locations to help residents safely dispose of unused prescription medications and prepare for flu season. The event will be held on Oct. 27 is designed for residents to get rid of unused or expired medications to help prevent accidental poisoning, overdoses and improper use. In 2016, U.S. poison control centers reported one accidental medication poisoning every 14.6 seconds, according to WellStar.

“The community can help prevent accidental poisoning, overdoses and improper use of medications by participating in WellStar Health System’s Medication Take Back,” said Cecelia Patellis, assistant vice president, WellStar Community Education and Outreach. “The first 100 participants at each location will receive a gift bag.”

Safety precautions for participants include:

• Packaging medications separate from sharp items such and needles and lancets.
• Used needles should be packaged and delivered in closed containers such as plastic bottles, milk jugs or plastic needle disposal bins/boxes; loose needles and sharps will not be accepted.
• Medications should be packaged and delivered in closed re-sealable zipper storage bags instead of the original plastic bottles from the pharmacy or store

All acceptable items will be received with no questions asked. No form of ID or registration is required.
