Driver Who Caused Accident in Smyrna Monday Arrested

The 46-year-old man faces a reckless driving charge for allegedly causing a five-vehicle accident which injured four people, one critically.

A Sandy Springs man is out on bond Tuesday following his arrest for allegedly beginning a five-vehicle accident in Smyrna on Monday morning.

The Smyrna Police Department has identified David Wayne Ballard, 46, as the man they say was behind the wheel of the gray Mazda RX8 which drove off Windy Hill Road near Dixie Avenue, rode up the angled support of the CSX railroad overpass, then landed on top of three other vehicles at the intersection of Windy Hill and Atlanta roads at 7:45 a.m. Monday.

Police say that four people are receiving care at WellStar Kennestone Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. One of the four victims is in critical condition, police say.

Ballard was arrested in Smyrna at 9:30 p.m. Monday, Cobb County jail records show. He is facing one charge of misdemeanor reckless driving, according to Smyrna police and jail records. Ballard secured a $1,000 bond and was released from custody at 5:42 a.m. Tuesday, jail records indicate.
