“Just last summer, we held an active threat exercise on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol – in the very location where today’s officers stopped the suspect,” U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said in a news release. “These now routine exercises are planned monthly and in different areas of the Capitol Complex to keep our officers ready for potential threats just like this.”
The incident took place ahead of President Donald Trump's State of the Union speech, which he is expected to give on Feb. 24 at the U.S. Capitol, according to NBC News.
The USCP’s Threat Assessment Section is working to determine a motive.
