Program: “DNA Testing as a Tool for Genealogical Research”

Terry Barton, a pioneer in genetic genealogy, has given scores of presentations on genetic genealogy to groups around the country. He is skilled in helping the attendees understand this often-complex new field, whether they are beginners or experienced users of DNA. This specific presentation will cover the four types of DNA testing for Genealogical Research: yDNA, mtDNA, atDNA & ySNP – providing a success story for each and talking about the practicalities of using DNA testing.

Actively involved since 2001 in using the exciting new tool of DNA for genealogy, Terry began with the Barton DNA Project, where he was both an administrator and DNA donor. For several years, the Barton DNA Surname Project was the second largest in the world and is still a “Top 100” project with more than 400 project members. In order to better understand how DNA testing can be used for genealogy, he has tested at a half dozen different testing companies and tried just about every possible DNA test open to genealogy researchers.

Terry has extended his learnings into WorldFamilies.net, a web-business working with Family Tree DNA, the world leader in DNA testing for genealogy. WorldFamilies serves the genetic genealogy community by providing Project Administration and Co-Administration, a systematic approach for project administration, free project web sites, and information for Surname DNA projects, project administrators and individuals who are using DNA for genealogy. Terry’s five-year-old blog on the WorldFamilies site provides his insights on using DNA for genealogy through more than 60 postings.

Sharing his DNA knowledge, Terry has presented more than 100 times at venues such as National Genealogical Society Conference (Richmond VA 2014), annual International Genetic Genealogy Conference (Houston TX, 2013 & Washington DC 2005), Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference (Knoxville TN 2010), Who Do You Think You Are? Exhibition (London 2010), and dozens of state, local, historical & genealogical Societies.

Serving as Atlanta Area Coordinator for International Society of Genetic Genealogy, Terry coordinates the DNA Special Interest Group for his local Genealogical Society and is one of the founding Board Members of the Journal of Genetic Genealogy. He is Vice-President of the Barton Historical Society after serving for 10 years as President, a Past President of the Genealogical Society of Cobb County (Georgia) and a Founding member of the Hodges-Hodge Society. Terry has a BS in Engineering from Texas Tech University and a MBA from Emory University.
