Griffin Middle School Building Leaders for Tomorrow

Students at the Smyrna school have been volunteering, donating money to charitable causes, and learning what it means to impact a community.

Staff Report

Griffin Middle School Builders Club is a student ran club that focuses on building leaders. It, “provides students with opportunities to develop leadership, improve self-esteem, increase civic engagement and learn life skills through service.” Griffin Middle School’s Builders Club currently has around 30 members, with anywhere from 18-22 active members at any one time. The students are provided multiple opportunities for growth and community service throughout the school year.

GMS Builders Club has reached out to the community many times already this year! Their members took a trip in December, accompanied by their school sponsors Anna Bassett and Kearstin Martin and their Kiwanis sponsor Alex DeBose, to sing, play charades, and read to the patrons at Delmar Gardens Assisted Living Community. They also spent time talking with the elderly and listening to their stories of “the good old days”.

In October, GMS’ Builders Club also donated $500 to #hashtaglunchbag ,an organization that feeds the homeless in Atlanta. Additionally, we send 5 students each month to help a parent volunteer with the food and clothes pantry hosted at the school!

They have also been doing many fundraisers to raise money for their annual end of year donation to a student chosen charity. This year the GMS Builders Club will donate to the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation. Last year, they were able to give $1000 to them, and they hope to give much more this year!

Anna Bassett, one of the club’s sponsors, said, “ We hope to give a total of $2500 to local charities, if not more. It’s amazing to see our students reach out and give their time and energy to an outside cause. They truly grow into confident, service-minded leaders during their time with Builders Club. Kearstin Martin (Builders Club co-sponsor) and I are very proud of their accomplishments.”

Griffin Middle School focuses on their student’s success in every aspect of their life, and GMS’ Builders Club is definitely on track to support that goal.
