The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Smyrna-Vinings.
Hello again, everybody! I'm back with your new edition of the Smyrna-Vinings Daily. Here are all the things you need to know about what's happening in town.
First, today's weather:
Cloudy, heavy t-storms; humid. High: 82 Low: 71.
Here are the top three stories today in Smyrna-Vinings:
- Atlanta area hemp stores are calling for the release of detained WNBA star Brittney Griner. The stores are calling on elected officials to play a more active role in bringing Griner home, as she is facing a 10-year prison sentence for the possession of cannabis. Griner had hemp oil in her possession, which owners of the hemp stores identify as frequently used by athletes for the treatment of anxiety. (CBS 46 News)
- Cobb commissioners have accepted the Rite Aid opioid lawsuit settlement after almost four years of litigation. Cobb has been near the top of overdose deaths in Georgia — many of them related to fentanyl and other opioids. The lawsuit alleges that Rite Aid did not do its part in identifying and reporting suspicious orders of prescription opioids. Although Rite Aid admitted no wrongdoing, it did agree to a $10.3 million payout. (East Cobb News)
- The Cobb Community Foundation has awarded three Fostering Education scholarships for the 2022 year. The scholarships are intended to help children aging out of the foster care system to attend higher education. Collins Arrey, 18, will attend Albany State University, Tianya Hunter, 19, will attend the College of Coastal Georgia, and Thinh Nguyen, 18, will attend Georgia State University. One applicant shared in their essay that "We [foster children] had no control where we will go and where we will live or what foster parents we will get."(Cobb County Courier)
