K-9 Coach Hosts Training To Make Shelter Dogs More Adoptable

Smyrna-based K-9 Coach hosts seminar to help save the lives of dogs and improve their adoptability.

SMYRNA, GA – In an effort to save the lives of dogs and improve their adoptability, Smyrna-based K-9 Coach, an industry leader in dog training, doggie daycare, boarding, and grooming, will be hosting the K9 Nose Work Shelter Project on Sunday, April 19 with all proceeds benefiting Atlanta Pet Rescue and Adoption. The seminar, which runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a one hour break for lunch, is designed to show how K9 Nose Work can help make a dog’s transition from rescue or shelter to permanent home a positive experience for all involved.

K9 Nose Work, inspired by working detection dogs, is a fun search and scenting activity for virtually all dogs and people. The easy-to-learn activity and sport builds confidence and focus in many dogs, and provides a safe way to keep dogs fit and healthy through mental and physical exercise.

Jill Marie O’Brien, co-founder of the National Association of Canine Scent Work, LLC, will be leading the seminar, which is aimed at the staff and volunteers of any and all local shelters and rescue groups. This is the first ever seminar of its kind held in Georgia.

Shelter and rescue dogs often have unknown pasts that can lead to unwanted and sometimes unpredictable behavior. K9 Nose Work offers a tailored workshop designed to address the special needs of these dogs. By engaging these once neglected and possibly mistreated dogs in the activity of K9 Nose Work, shelter workers and volunteers can bring real and positive change to their behavior.

“Happy, confident, approachable dogs find safe, lifelong homes with caring people,” says Amber Burckhalter, owner and CEO of K-9 Coach. “We are committed to doing all we can to help dogs live long and happy lives. This seminar is the perfect way to reach the individuals who work with rescue dogs – the first line of defense, if you will – that can make a real and lasting difference in the behavior, and thus the lives, of these dogs.”

K-9 Coach and Atlanta Pet Rescue are located right next to each other on Atlanta Road in Smyrna and share more than just a common love of dogs. The two organizations partner in a variety of ways to help save dogs and further enrich their lives.

K-9 Coach offers training and behavior evaluations for dogs at in-take and throughout their stay at Atlanta Pet Rescue. K-9 Coach trainers offer written documentation for an adopter offering guidelines and expectations for taking home their new shelter dog– from the initial arrival at the forever home, to the first week to the first month. For dogs that exhibit behavior issues, or when their length of stay reaches a certain point, a behavior program is initiated and an investment of time is made to overcome this hurdle. K-9 Coach also provides Atlanta Pet Rescue adopters with their first one-on-one behavior evaluation at no cost to the adopter, which is designed to encourage proper training and to help make the adoption process easier and more successful.
