Smyrna Population Grows 25 Percent Since 2000

U.S. Census Bureau releases Georgia data. Smyrna sees big jump.

More than 10,000 people moved into the city of Smyrna between 2000 and 2010, a population jump of 25 percent, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Smyrna’s population, according to the Census, is 51,271, compared to 40,999, in 2000.

Of that number, 27, 593 are identified as Caucasian, and 16,204 are African-American. More than 7,000 are Latino, with residents of Asian heritage coming in next, at 2,500.

In Cobb County overall, the population increased 13.2 percent from 2000, to 688,078.

Overall, Georgia’s largest county is Fulton, with a population of 920,581. Its population grew by 12.8 percent since 2000. The other counties in the top five include Gwinnett, with a population of 805,321 (increase of 36.9 percent); DeKalb, 691,893 (increase of 3.9 percent); and Chatham, 265,128 (increase of 14.3 percent).
