Mural Art Project Underway in Smyrna

Among the beautiful housing in the historic Williams Park neighborhood of Smyrna a new porch is being built, or is it? What was once a 40 ft long brick wall is currently being transformed into a front porch scene showing families enjoying music. Award winning GA artist Sonny Franks is currently applying his skills on Roswell St, creating an unusual piece of outdoor artwork. Viewers need to look twice to determine if what they see is real or paint.
Funded by The Music Class Inc., the mural features parents and children from the neighborhood playing guitar, singing, and dancing. The artwork represents the mission of The Music Class, which is for children to grow up in a household where music is a regular part of their day. “Daily exposure to music is not only critical to nurturing the music development of young children, but it also creates a special bond between parents and their children.” said Rob Sayer, founder and director of The Music Class.
“I love music, and showing members of the community coming together around music is such a joyful message.” said Mr. Franks. The mural includes colors and architectural styles from the neighborhood to create the illusion of reality.

Now that the mural is taking shape, onlookers are pausing to take in the work in progress. Mr. Franks particularly enjoys the cheers and waves from onlookers passing by. Children who are lucky enough to come by when he is there are invited to say hello and make their own memories by applying a few brush strokes.
The mural is located at The Music Class, 1446 Roswell St, Smyrna GA, 30080. Weather permitting, it should be completed by the end of December.
