New Scholarship Established at Osborne High School
PTSA seeking support for Portia Gayle Scholarship
Osborne High School is pleased to announce that the first donation to the Portia Gayle Scholarship Fund has been received from the Allstate Foundation Helping Hands program. The Scholarship was established in August 2014 to honor this beloved teacher and friend and her years of service to the Osborne community. The event was also marked with the planting of a tree on campus in her memory.
The purpose of the fund is to help a deserving youth in his or her educational journey as they leave Osborne. An emphasis is placed on the level of commitment to academics as well as service and citizenship of the applicants, since this embodies the philosophy of PTA. Consideration is also given to the student’s financial need.
The Osborne HS PTSA completed the Allstate Foundation Helping Hands application, participated in interviews conducted by the grantee and was awarded the grant in December. PTSA Treasurer and Allstate employee Melinda Lillard brought the opportunity to the attention of the PTSA and the team collaborated on the application. “I thank Allstate for its support and couldn’t be more pleased that one of our hard-working and diligent students will receive financial assistance to further his or her education” said Principal Josh Morreale. “I look forward to working with the PTSA during this process and seeing who will be named as our inaugural Portia Gayle Scholarship winner in 2015.”

PTSA President M’bele Rogers hopes that the fund will grow such that there will be 2-3 winners each year. “Future awards will depend upon our community and we invite our Osborne neighbors, alumni, stakeholders and community to support this effort,’ she stated. Checks should be made payable to Osborne High School PTSA and can be mailed to the attention of the PTSA at the school’s address of 2451 Favor Rd. Marietta 30060.
