A controversial proposal prohibiting Pebblebrook High School students from participating in extracurricular activities if their parents aren’t engaged with their education is on Thursday’s Cobb school board agenda.

The idea is being floated by board member David Morgan, reports the AJC. Morgan says the policy will improve students’ academic performance, while opponents say it will punish poorer families.

Pebblebrook High is located in Mableton, and has been an under-performing school for years.

If approved, it would be metro Atlanta’s first program that prevents students from playing sports and getting involved in other activities because of their parents’ lack of participation.

Parent/teacher conferences would also be mandatory under the proposal.
