🌱 AR-15 Sales Up In Smyrna + Monkeypox Confirmed In Atlanta

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Smyrna-Vinings.

Good morning, Smyrna-Vinings! I'm Carla Varner and I'll be your new source for all the events, news, and general happenings in your town. Here is everything you need to know today in five minutes or less.

First, today's weather:

Humid; a stray p.m. t-storm. High: 84 Low: 69.

Here are the top three stories in Smyrna-Vinings today:

  1. According to Eric Wallace of Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, sales of AR-15 rifles have gone up three times their normal rate over the last 10 days. The high-velocity gun has been linked to multiple mass shootings, including the recent elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Wallace told FOX 5 Atlanta that "stock is good right now," and that he'll be buying more to meet high demand from Georgians who want to stock up before gun control laws potentially change. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  2. The Georgia Department of Health confirmed that a metro Atlanta man suspected of having the monkeypox virus is indeed positive for the disease. The man, who has a history of international travel, tested positive last week. Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headache, back pain, muscle aches, and low energy. (WSB Atlanta)
  3. A Cobb County couple has been charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct after leaving their two children alone in a hot car in a Smyrna Aldi parking lot last week. The children, ages 3 and 9, were reportedly locked in the turned-off vehicle for at least 20 minutes with the windows rolled up, which caused the interior temperature to rise above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. An Aldi employee noticed and the store called in the Smyrna Fire Department to pull the children out of the vehicle using an unlock kit. (Subscription: Atlanta-Journal Constitution)
