Smyrna-based company raises money for Parkinson’s research

Approval for company's flagship station on Spring Road in stall mode, but company not slowing down in efforts to help others.

At last week’s meeting of the Smyrna City Council, the pubic hearing to discuss the rezoning request for the proposed RaceTrac gas station on Spring Road was tabled until the June 20 meeting of the council at the request of the applicant.

This particular RaceTrac is intended to be the flagship station for Smyrna-based RaceTrac Petroleum Inc., but its location has caused concern among some residents.

While this debated topic was delayed for a while longer, RaceTrac Pertoleum Inc. made news nonetheless by recently raising $130,739 for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research during National Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

“RaceTrac is a member of each of the communities where we operate. Partnering with The Michael J. Fox Foundation gave our in-store team members and guests a way to support their neighbors impacted by Parkinson’s disease,” said Allison Moran, RaceTrac Sr. Vice President. “We set an ambitious goal to raise $100,000. Exceeding expectations tells us this is a cause both our team members and guests believe in. We look forward to building on this success next year.”

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that affects an estimated one million Americans. The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to funding research to speed more effective treatments and a cure for Parkinson’s. RaceTrac’s April 25–29 Coffee for a Cause campaign was its first in support of the foundation.

Proceeds from the sale of all coffee and specially marked World’s Finest Chocolate bars were earmarked for the foundation during the weeklong campaign. Guests were also encouraged to donate at the counter or online at http://www.michaeljfox.org/racetrac.

Last week, Fox announced that he will soon appear on an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and play himself in a show that pokes fun at Parkinson's disease.

Fox told TV Guide that in the episode, star show Larry David believes that "I'm being symptomatic just to annoy him -- a whole passive-aggressive thing. He's complaining because I'm shuffling and making noise upstairs. It's very funny."
