Smyrna City Council Will Hold First In Person Meeting In Weeks

After weeks of virtual meetings due to the coronavirus pandemic, Smyrna City Council will hold its first in-person meeting.

SMYRNA, GA — After weeks of virtual meetings, the Smyrna City Council will hold its first in-person council meeting Monday. The council will meet in the large gym in the Smyrna Community Center, which will allow space for social distancing.

All attendees are required to be temperature checked upon entry and must have a face covering, while following social distancing guidelines.

Chairs for public seating have been appropriately spaced. The podium will be set up for public comment and will be sanitized after each speaker.

The gym will stay set up for future meetings including Planning and Zoning and License and Variance meetings and hearings. The gym will be cleaned and sanitized after each meeting.

Other changes in Smyrna include the parks and recreational facilities.

The changes are as follows:

  • All restroom facilities at sports fields will open Monday and will be cleaned and sanitized multiple times per day.
  • Tennis courts and restroom facilities at Tolleson Park and Rose Garden Park will open Wednesday, May 20. Restrooms will be sanitized multiple times per day. Court reservations may be made beginning Monday, May 18 by calling the Community Center.
  • Both Lake Court and Burger Park Dog Parks and restroom facilities will also open Wednesday, May 20. Restrooms will be sanitized multiple times per day.

Restrooms at Taylor Brawner Park will open Monday, May 18 and will be cleaned and sanitized multiple times per day.

Tolleson pool and the Wolfe Center will remain closed at this time, and all City buildings will remain closed to the public, except for the drive-through window at City Hall.

City staff will begin reporting back on staggered shifts Monday to prepare city buildings for public access when it reopens. No date has been set. They will take appropriate health precautions including social distancing, temperature screenings, face coverings, and increased disinfection of workspaces.

City officials said they are remaining cautious in how they approach services and activities. The health of residents and staff is priority when it comes to any decision that’s being made.
