Smyrna Deputy Police Chief Passes Away

The 38-year veteran of the force suffered a heart attack on Monday, a department spokesman said.

The Smyrna Police Department’s Deputy Police Chief passed away earlier this week after suffering a heart attack while on duty, the department said.

Michael Brown, 63, had spent 38 years with the Smyrna Police Department, the last 15 of which he served in the deputy chief role, said spokesman Chris Graeff. Prior to his service in Smyrna, Brown had spent time in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Navy Reserve, earning a decoration for his service.

Brown was having lunch with several members of the command staff at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Monday when he became seriously ill, Graeff said. The Cobb County Fire Department and Metro Ambulance responded to the restaurant to render first aid and rush Brown to Kennestone Hospital. Brown made it to the hospital, but died very shortly after arrival, according to Graeff.
