Smyrna Sees Drop In Registered Voters

Patch looks at who will determine Tuesday's hotly contested elections.

Smyrna has seen a 6 percent drop in its number of registered voters since the last presidential election.

A Patch analysis shows 27,639 Smyrna residents were registered to vote in the last presidential election. The number of registered voters who can cast ballots on Tuesday is 26,081, according to the most recent figures from Georgia secretary of state’s elections division. That's a decline of 1,558 people.

Smyrna saw a over the last decade, according to the 2010 Census.

Statewide, voter rosters are down by less than 1 percent, from 5,755,750 in November 2008 to 5,743,519 nearly 5.8 million to about 5.7 million.

Matt Carrothers, a spokesman for the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, said rosters fluctuate because of regularly scheduled updates to voter lists that account for relocations and deaths.

A number of will be held in Smyrna on Nov. 8, including for , as well as a .

Demographically, Smyrna’s voters are almost identical to those who participated in the last presidential election:

  • White voters remain in the majority (60 percent in November 2008, compared to 59 percent today).
  • Black voters have declined 1 percentage point (31 percent to 30 percent).
  • The only demographic that has increased are Hispanic voters, who have grown from 2.1 percent to 2.3 percent.
