Over 30 Smyrna schoolchildren took part in their school’s recent science fair, putting their growing minds to the test by using the scientific method to design experiments to test hypotheses.
37 students from Russell Elementary School took part in the school’s third annual science fair on Jan. 21, according to the Cobb County School District. Over 100 members of the community came to share in the youngsters’ scientific discoveries, and 25 local judges decided which students’ experiments were the best of the bunch.

It was a difficult decision for the judges, but they were able to pick out the three most interesting and well-done experiments. Haley Jones extracted genetic material from fruit during her experiment; Amina Turkovic investigated the possible link between brain disorders and memories, and Jamison Bodner was able to determine which metal items rust the fastest.
The three winners of the Russell Science Fair will now present their findings at the Cobb County Elementary Science Fair, which will be held on March 7 at Walton High School.
