Whitefield Academy is proud to announce three seniors who were named semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit® Scholar Program. Caleb Corliss, Zachary Justice, and Donovan Pearce were among the approximately 16,000 scholars nationwide who were selected based on their high PSAT scores to compete for National Merit Finalist status. Becoming a Finalist will make them eligible to win one of approximately 7,500 National Merit scholarships, to be awarded next spring and worth in excess of $33 million, overall.
We are so proud of these young men who have each contributed mightily over their many years at Whitefield, not only in academics but also with our arts and athletics programs. Each is an outstanding example of achievement and we couldn't be prouder of them," said Nathan Stevens, Assistant Head of Academic Affairs and Upper School Principal.
To become a National Merit Finalist, scholars must submit a detailed application providing information about their academic record, school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying PSAT. More than 1.6 million high school juniors entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 2018. Those reaching semifinalist status make up less than one percent of all high school seniors in the United States.
