Update on Smyrna Construction Projects

The Springhill neighborhood in Smyrna’s Ward 1 is hosting a meeting Wednesday night to discuss projects and opportunities for the Spring Road community.  

Residents there have requested Councilwoman Melleny Pritchett to assist them in conducting the general interest meeting. Local community volunteer Leo Smith, who served as Pritchett’s campaign manager this past election, will assist by facilitating a roundtable style discussion.

Respecting fire code capacity, the 6:30 p.m. meeting is open to Springhill residents only and will take place in the room in the rear of Smyrna Fire Station No. 3 located at 2825 Park Road. For more information e-mail roundtables@smyrnaward1.org

Next week, residents of the Smyrna Heights neighborhood in Ward 4 are invited to attend a forum hosted by new Councilman Corkey Welch.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 10 from 7 – 9 p.m. Welch, who was sworn in Tuesday evening at , plans to deliver a short introduction, field questions and discuss neighborhood concerns.

Late last week, Smyrna officials gave an update on a quartet of construction projects. According to the city, the South Cobb Drive Improvement project is about 80 percent complete. The Crossing Shopping Center main entrance is now to grade and being prepped for road base material. The Concord Square shopping center main entrance is being graded. The traffic signal span poles are now in place and being wired for signal installation. Right of Way work continues at both the Concord Road and Church Street intersections. Paving of this portion of South Cobb Drive has resumed this week.

The Atlanta Road Trail project is about 75 percent complete. Trail construction remains at about 90 percent complete, signal and pedestrian crossing work is about 20 percent complete and landscaping is about 40 percent complete.

The Campbell Road Bridge project is about 70 percent complete. The water main connection is complete on both sides of the bridge. The deck was poured last week and is complete. Contractors were expected to begin the road work for the new approaches to the bridge this week.

The Atlanta Road Streetscape project between Spring Road and Fleming Street was expected to begin this week. The contractor will begin mobilization with traffic control devices and signage.

Powder Springs Councilwoman Nancy Hudson referenced the City of Smyrna during Monday’s meeting concerning an approved $3 monthly stormwater fee for Powder Springs. that her mother in the bigger city of Smyrna pays $2.36 monthly and said the fee for Powder Springs should start off smaller than $3.

Smyrna Councilwoman Teri Anulewicz reminded residents Tuesday night of Saturday’s “Bring One for the Chipper” Christmas tree recycling event sponsored by . The free dropoff site will be at the on Jan. 7 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Drop off your tree and get a free dogwood, redbud, or cedar seedling.
