Voters Say Yes to Bacon and Sunday Sales
Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon wins handily on Election Day. Meanwhile, there will be a recount for the razor-thin Ward 1 race, while Wards 4, 5, and 7 are headed to December runoffs.

It was an easy victory Tuesday night for and for Jonquil City voters who want the opportunity to buy packaged alcohol in stores on Sundays.
On a Tuesday featuring gorgeous weather, 5,501 of the city’s 26,223 registered voters (21 percent) went to the polls to vote for mayor and all seven council seats. Smyrna-Vinings Patch provided daylong coverage of Election Day which you can see here.
Voters were in favor by a 76-24 percent margin, to allow Sunday alcohol sales beginning Jan. 1, 2012.

Bacon, too, rolled as he had 75 percent of the votes to easily turn back challengers (17 percent) and (7 percent).
"I'm very humble,’’ Bacon said at his victory party Tuesday night at . “I grew up here....I'll never forget where I come from and the people I represent."

About 300 people attended the celebration, including Smyrna citizen Kathy Fouts: "He's an excellent guy...He's done a wonderful job for the city of Smyrna," she said.
And while Councilmembers , Ward 3, and , Ward 6, as well as newcomer , Ward 2, were unopposed and won handily, the other four council races were far closer.
Especially in Ward 1, where garnered 207 votes and her challenger, Wheeler High School teacher , got 204 votes.
According to state code, when there is a difference of less than 1 percent between the leader and second place finisher, the second place finisher has a right to request a recount "within a period of two business days following the certification of the election results." Miller has indicated he will be requesting a recount.
The other three council races have yet to be decided and will require runoffs on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
In Ward 4, Councilman Mike McNabb just missed avoiding a runoff as he garnered 48.57 percent of the vote. But he’ll have to face Charles “Corkey” Welch, who got 32 percent of the vote. They were followed by Judith Causey Jones (14 percent) and Alex Bretch (5 percent).
In Ward 5, (40 percent) will face Susan Dease Wilkinson (39 percent) in next month’s runoff. Mike Hyde finished with 20 percent of the votes.
And in Ward 7, Ron Fennel (39 percent) will face Garry Osborne (21.43 percent), who finished just ahead of Vic Yankouski (21.04 percent) and Ziad Salameh (17.99 percent). Osborne garnered 380 votes to Yankouski’s 373.
