Primary Care vs. Urgent Care: What is the Difference? Part 2

Yesterday we contrasted Primary Care’s emphasis on β€œrelationship” with Urgent Care’s emphasis on β€œconvenience.”  Another way to describe the difference between Primary Care and Urgent Care is to discuss the concept of planned vs. unplanned medical care.

Β

Primary Care is the best choice when dealing with those medical issues that are planned for.Β  Primary Care facilities usually allow patients to book appointments far in advance.Β  This is especially useful when setting up a regular, but occasional procedure such as an annual physical, or a frequently recurring procedure such as the monitoring of an ongoing medical condition.Β  It is less difficult for the average patient to plan around their work schedule when they have plenty of lead time.Β  Primary Care facilities work seamlessly when patients are scheduled at regular and well-planned intervals.Β  Unfortunately, when unplanned events begin augmenting the well-planned schedule of a primary care physician, wait times begin to grow and patients can be greatly inconvenienced.Β  Often, Primary Care practices are forced to stop taking more appointments for the day because they have hit their maximum capacity.Β  For patients that find they need immediate (unplanned) medical attention but face the problem of no availability, it is very comforting to know that they have another option.

Β

Urgent Care is set up to be very efficient at handling medical issues that are unplanned.Β  Most Urgent Care Centers allow for same-day appointments, but are primarily geared for walk-in patients.Β  In fact, long-term future appointments are fairly rare.Β  Instead, some of the ambiance that is traditionally seen in a Primary Care facility may be lacking, as the emphasis will be on efficiency and getting patients to the point of seeing a medical provider (doctor, physician’s assistant, or nurse practitioner) as quickly as possible.Β  Urgent Care facilities will be set up to handle minor emergencies immediately, and will have some fairly hefty machinery available that many Primary Care facilities do not possess.Β  While sudden non-life threatening injuries and illnesses can be inconvenient to treat in the setting of Primary Care, they lend themselves perfectly to the Urgent Care model.
