Couple, Dog Safe After Canoe Tips Over on Chattahoochee

Gwinnett Fire reported they were able to get to the riverbank despite swift currents caused by electric generation at Buford Dam.

A man, woman and their dog made it out of the water safe after their canoe tipped over on the Chattahoochee River Tuesday afternoon.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the incident happened south of the Settles Bridge area while electricity was being generated at Buford Dam, which caused turbulent conditions.

The couple and dog were already out of the water when first responders arrived.

Rutledge said the couple was using a “drag anchor” to keep the boat steady in the swift current. The anchor apparent got caught on something -- possibly a tree trunk or a rock -- and the canoe flipped over.

Both were evaluated by paramedics and released.
