
The Gwinnett school board will hold the first of two public hearings on its fiscal year 2013 budget on Thursday, May 10, at the . The session will be at 7 p.m.
at an area board meeting in Duluth in April.

In March, the state's largest school system rolled out its proposal -- essentially unchanged from the current fiscal year. However, the general fund, which is the core of day to day business, is down 4.8 percent from 2012. The decline is somewhat due to the still-declining property tax digest in Gwinnett County ($36 million for 2012).
However, a bright spot: the E-SPLOST measure approved by voters last November will mean an additional $101.2 million in FY '13. That money has to be spent on construction projects and can't be used for such things as teacher salaries.

GCPS also will hold a public hearing before its regular board meeting on May 17, at which formal adoption is planned. The new fiscal year will begin July 1.
