Georgia Says Pay Child Support or Lose Driver's License

Parents who are perpetually behind on payments without submitting a reason are liable to have their drivers licenses suspended soon.

A new computer link between two state departments spells bad news for parents who constantly fail to pay court-ordered child support.

The Georgia Department of Driver Services can now digitally communicate with the Georgia Department of Human Services and will be able to suspend the driver’s licenses of any parent who is delinquent in their child support payments, WSB-TV reports.

The two agencies began working together in May to target approximately 12,000 Georgia parents who are behind on their child support payments. These parents have since received notice that if they do not pay up or explain why they cannot pay, their licenses will be suspended on Aug. 20.

Going after non-paying parents’ drivers’ licenses seems to be working; the amount of child support payments received by the state has tripled since the link was established.
