Go Ahead, Forge Those Workplace Relationships!

If you're looking to make your 9-5 a bit more enjoyable, take some time to engage with your co-workers.

Most of us spend more time at work than we do around our own family, so it shouldn’t be surprising that forging positive relationships with our coworkers is important, especially when looking to make the workplace a more gratifying place to be.

Yes, this can be a challenge, especially if your office thrives on being a high-competition environment; however, it’s important to establish a policy of open communication so that everyone feels comfortable with the dynamics in the office.

When speaking with your co-workers, make a point to refrain from passing judgement and try to reign in the gossip. Sure, it may be tempting to vent about so-and-so’s botched presentation or their propensity for tardiness—especially when they’re not in the room—but airing those issues in such a manner not only hinders open communication, but makes it difficult for others to trust you.

Part of building workplace relationships requires a genuine effort to be, well…genuine! Along with making it a daily goal to speak words of encouragement and to remain fully present when engaging in conversation, you might also want to consider acknowledging special events such as birthdays, holidays, graduations, and promotions.

Plain and simple—and I’ve spoken about this before—it’s not actually that challenging to make people feel important and cared about. Sure, this can sometimes be difficult in the workplace, given social norms and proper boundaries; however, don’t be afraid to leave a small gift basket on your partner’s desk after they’ve finally completed the coursework for an advanced degree or welcomed a new baby into the family.
