Gwinnett Braves Win Before Large Crowd

Coolray crowd of 10,000-plus sees G-Braves move into first.

The Gwinnett Braves earned the first Independence Day win in their history Monday, and did so before a season-high crowd.

The G-Braves, who moved to the area in 2009 from Richmond, Va., defeated Durham 11-3 at Coolray Field before a crowd of 10,226. Shorstop Brandon Hicks' grand slam in the eighth inning was the clinching blow.

The G-Braves now are a game ahead of Durham in the International League South. DH Chris Carter was 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and a homer for Gwinnett.
