Korean Culture Takes Over Suwanee Park

If you're looking for a hot dog or some oldies music, don't go near Town Center Park in Suwanee this weekend.

But if you want a deal on some squid, or to munch on some tteokbakki (just $5), come on down.

The annual Korean Festival rules in the park. Events began Saturday (Oct. 20) and will continue Sunday (noon-6:30 p.m.)

It draws from a wide area, as it is billed as the largest such festival in the Southeast.

It drew a vendor from the Si Gol Market in New York/New Jersey -- who didn't speak English. For local knowledge, he relied on Jee Won, a Duluth High student.

Their display at the festival featured such items as squid ($7 for 0.9 pounds), fish heads and plum extract.

Another booth was selling cosmetics, such as Bubble (colored hair dye) and Sulwasso (balancing water).

Some of the commerce is more Americanized. A raffle was being held for a Hyundai Eqqus -- 300 tickets were being sold for $100 each.

Among the activities scheduled for Sunday is a talent show, described as the Korean equivalent of "American Idol."
