UPDATED: UGA President Confirms Plans To Leave

The university's academic status has improved in his tenure. There also have been controversies in the athletic area.

He has been the president of the for 15 years, but Michael Adams says he will step down from his position in 2013.

During his time as president, UGA has increased in stature both academically and athletically. The school's rankings have risen, as have donations, grant money and outside funds, and it is now considered one of the country's best public institutions.

There have been some controversies. Adams and former Athletic Director Vince Dooley clashed when Adams forced Dooley out as AD in 2004, replacing him with Damon Evans.

And Adams overruled Dooley in 2000 and fired then-football coach Jim Donnan after the Bulldogs lost to Georgia Tech for the third straight season. Georgia subsequently hired Mark Richt to replace Donnan.
