A quick recap of some top stories from the Suwanee area last week.

It was a week of blockbuster news for Suwanee and the area. Let's take another look at some headline events:

The controversial idea of turning county-owned Briscoe Field over to a private operator is gaining no favor with county administrators. The agenda for the June 5 Board of Commissioners work session carries a staff recommendation to reject the proposal by Propeller Investments, the only entity to submit a proposal. Residents in the area overwhelmingly opposed any privatization, which carried the possibility of commercial passenger service.

The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners, the county's governing body, again was rocked by scandal. District 1 Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, whose district includes Suwanee, pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal bribery charge and resigned her office. Now 64, the former Duluth mayor faces up to 10 years in prison. This comes less than two years after Charles Bannister and Kevin Kenerly left the commission amid bribery allegations. Lasseter's son John Fanning also pleaded guilty in the bribery scheme.

Suwanee has another national honor to hang on its mantel. Kiplinger magazine ranked the city No. 3 nationally for best places to raise children. Previously, the city had been ranked as one of America's top places to live by Money magazine. Kiplinger cited the obvious attributes: the parks system, low crime rate, and high-achieving schools. The Suwanee Farmers Market is known for having some unique tenants. None is more unique than Lil Spirit Cakes, whose recipes include some with alcohol. "Once people taste them, they want them," one owner said. (Wonder why?).
