Why You Should Give Chocolate

Have you ever wondered where our obsession with this AMAZING food originated?

In today’s world, giving chocolate for a myriad of different occasions and holidays has become commonplace—especially since it’s incredibly rare to find someone who will honestly state that they don’t really care for it. However, from birthdays and Valentine’s Day, to occasions worthy of an “I’m thinking of you” or “thank you,” have you ever wondered how people started the habit of bestowing chocolate upon others?

In short, there is nothing sweeter than demonstrating the depth of your appreciation and care, especially when it comes in the form of decadent truffles and rich, creamy chocolate squares. This meaning—which can be traced back to the Aztecs, who presented cups of chocolate to kings and members of royalty, as well as warriors and explorers—is tied to the ancient notion that cacao beans are gifts from the gods. Thus, the Aztecs found it appropriate to give chocolate to those they considered to be “god-like” beings, including the Spaniards who wound up keeping cacao beans a secret (for over a century!) from the rest of the world after they conquered the Aztec lands.

Consequently, during ancient times, chocolate was also known as an aphrodisiac, which helped increase its popularity in Europe and led to tales of French doctors who used to prescribe in an effort to mend broken hearts and improve gloomy moods. However, it was actually Queen Victoria who began giving chocolate as a gift when, during the 1900’s, she sent tins of it for Christmas to soldiers fighting in the Boer War. Thus, over the years, chocolate has virtually become synonymous with warm feelings and gratitude.
