DeKalb Schools Closed Tuesday

All scheduled events, including after school programs and extra-curricular activities are now canceled.

Just announced by Superintendent Michael Thurmond:

The DeKalb County SchoolΒ District will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014 due to high winds andΒ extremely cold temperatures. The District will close to protect the health and wellΒ being of students and staff because of the potential risks associated withΒ frostbite and hypothermia. All scheduled events, including after school programsΒ and extra-curricular activities are canceled.Β

The District consulted with the National Weather Service and Dr. Sandra Ford,Β Director of DeKalb County Board of Health. According to Dr. Ford, β€œAs windΒ speeds increase, heat is carried away from the body faster, which lowers skinΒ temperature, increasing risk for frostbite and hypothermia.

In the weather we areΒ expecting, children would need hats, gloves, coats, and even face coverings, asΒ well as appropriate shoes and socks to protect those areas at greatest risk forΒ damage from exposure: fingers, toes, earlobes, and the tip of the nose.”

The District’s Inclement Weather Advisory Team will continue to monitor allΒ district and school operations including facilities, maintenance, andΒ transportation.
