DeKalb Schools Show Gains in Year-End Tests

Schools in the DeKalb County School District showed important gains in the recently released end-of-course-tests results, according to a release on the district website

“We are proud of the gains seen across the district,” said Michael Thurmond, superintendent of the DeKalb County School District. “Work remains to be done, but we have set standards and built a foundation focusing on growth and achievement for the new school year.”

High Proficiency Rates

· DeKalb Early College Academy -100% proficiency rates in four content areas (9th Grade Literature, American Literature, Physical Science, and Economics)

· DeKalb School of the Arts - 100% proficiency in two content areas (9th Grade Literature and American Literature)

· Gateway to College - 100% proficiency in one content area (American Literature)

Double-digit Growth

· DeKalb Alternative School (9th Grade Literature, American Literature, and US History)

· Towers High School (9th Grade Literature and Economics

· Elizabeth Andrews High School (American Literature and Economics

· Stone Mountain High School (Biology and Math II)

· Chamblee High School (Physical Science and Coordinate Algebra)

· Cedar Grove High School (Economics)

· Redan High School (American Literature)

· Columbia High School (Physical Science)

· Clarkston High School (Physical Science)

· Cross Keys High School (Coordinate Algebra)

· Lithonia High School (US History)

· McNair High School (Economics)

· Miller Grove High School (US History)

· Stephenson High School (US History) Middle School Participants

Middle School Participants

· Chamblee Middle School - 100% proficiency rate (Coordinate Algebra)

· Double-digit growth: Chapel Hill Middle School, Druid Hills Middle School, PATH Academy, Sequoyah Middle School, and Tucker Middle School)

“The overall proficiency levels for both Coordinate Algebra and Analytic Geometry need greater improvement,” said Thurmond. “This indicates a need for more rigorous intervention in improving performance in mathematics, and we are responding with actions that will address this need.”

The district has established a set of strategies that will incorporate teacher training, more critical thinking skills for students, and additional student practice time in the new school year.
