Students' Scopes Monkey Trial Project Wins Invite to State History Contes

National History Day in Georgia is a competition program of the Georgia Humanities Council and LaGrange College in partnership with Mercer University. The yearly contest is based on individuals or small groups conducting historical research and creating projects around a theme in any of five different categories: exhibits, performances, documentaries, research papers and websites.

This year’s theme is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”

DeKalb School of the Arts successfully participated for the first time ever in the South Atlanta Metro Regional Contest on March 8.

The History Club was represented by Emma Rary, who competed in the individual exhibit category with her project on “Righting Imperial Wrongs: America’s Responsibility to Liberia.”

Eliza Guinn, Darya Mack, Lauren Weiss and Naya James competed in the group performance category with their project on the “Scopes Monkey Trial: The Evolution of Student Rights and School Responsibilities.” Based on their outstanding projects, they are now invited to participate in the state contest, which is April 26 on the campus of Mercer University in Macon.
